The Slow Thaw
On designing a softer transition into spring with the nervous system at the center
Spring is upon us. This is the season when flowers replace blankets, layers begin to be shed, and evenings soften at the edges. It’s time for your mood to begin reflecting that too.
Seasonal shifts ask something of the nervous system. More light, more movement, more stimulation after months of quiet nights in. Moving into spring isn’t about immediate shifts. It’s about recalibrating how we move through change, allowing the nervous system to adjust without abandoning the comfort of cozy candles and home-cooked meals.
Here’s a visual landscape for what a softer transition into spring can look like, when mornings are still dewy and baths are still warm: a darker moodboard slowly dissolving into a lighter one, capturing that quiet shift into March.
The Twilight Hour
A darker, cozier turn of the season
Think slow mornings while the air carries a fresh breeze, windows opening a little earlier each day. Returning outward, gently.
Long walks where the air still has a bit of bite. Fresh flowers on a table still alight with candlelight. Light, smoky incense in the background (Vyrao’s witchy incense for me lately).
Candlesticks at twilight. Cozy lobby bars. Candlelit baths. Notebooks and journaling outdoors when the sun finally feels warm enough. Bookstore visits, library passings. Softness in shadows. Spring, but in a cardigan.
Matcha & Blush Mornings
A lighter, pastel March
This one is more colorful: pastel pinks, matcha greens, warm beiges, plush bathrobes. Your favorite pj set. Blooming flowers. More life.
Slow early mornings, reading in bed, giving yourself enough time to get ready for the day. Matcha on the patio. Abstract floral nails. Lippies in your bag (Summer Fridays’ strawberry soft serve has me in a chokehold, in a duo with birthday cake).
Trying new recipes, even inventing new ones. My latest: a sushi burrito moment —ground beef with diced onion, taco seasoning, and tajín, wrapped in seaweed with another sprinkle of tajín and spicy mayo for the final touch. Controversial, yet irresistible, and ready in under 20 minutes (a clear winner if you ask me 😉). Last but not least, bring in a nightcap: a non-caffeinated herbal tea before bed to settle the nerves.
I hope this March clears the fog from your mind. Brings you genuine laughter, sharper discernment, and a little more clarity to your soul.
Don’t rush the transition. Let your body dictate the pace of your March. Instead of rushing toward tomorrow, trust the moment. Set short-term goals, then break them into smaller fragments. One step at a time. Bring movement before momentum. Let progress lead over perfection.
One day you’ll wake up and realize the uncertainty of tomorrow has begun to dissipate, as the seasonal shift takes hold and spring slowly unfolds.
But most importantly, don’t forget to be gentle with yourself and please…take your time.
